Ebook About William Manchester's epic and definitive account of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. As the world still reeled from the tragic and historic events of November 22, 1963, William Manchester set out, at the request of the Kennedy family, to create a detailed, authoritative record of the days immediately preceding and following President John F. Kennedy's death. Through hundreds of interviews, abundant travel and firsthand observation, and with unique access to the proceedings of the Warren Commission, Manchester conducted an exhaustive historical investigation, accumulating forty-five volumes of documents, exhibits, and transcribed tapes. His ultimate objective -- to set down as a whole the national and personal tragedy that was JFK's assassination -- is brilliantly achieved in this galvanizing narrative, a book universally acclaimed as a landmark work of modern history.Book The Death of a President: November 20-November 25, 1963 Review :
A must for Kennedy fans. Tremendous detail about what happened in Dallas and getting his body home, and how all the details of those next days. It confirmed my already low opinion of Johnson and Hoover. It also confirmed the tremendous grace of Jackie, and how she somehow dug deep within herself to provide a lasting legacy for her deeply beloved husband. Such interesting detail of events around those five days in November. Detailed all of the many ways that Sergeant Shriver’s worked in so many of the details of the funeral, but especially in what he did to assist in the dignified way in which JFK’s body was received back to the White House. A wonderful testament to the ways in which all of the Kennedys dealt with the horrible tragedy of their loss and the ways in which they dealt with the unimaginable. I read straight through which I don’t recommend. Too much heartbreak for one sitting. Best detail of anything I have read about those terrible days. Beautifully written by the author Jackie chose to write about Jack, but whom she later turned against as it let people in too far to her heartbreak and things she didn’t want anyone else to know. A must read. I first read this book back in 1967 when it was first published, and am glad that it is still in print As an Englishman resident in the UK with a passion for American history and literature I read the book at a time when the memory of JFK's assassination was still fresh in the minds of the many admirers he had had in the UK.Given the wealth of books his death has generated over the subsequent years, I was happy to return to this "original" explanation of the tragic events of that November day. I suspect we will never know for sure the full story of that day, but my fondness for the victim remains as does my love for the US. Despite cruel acts such as these America remains a great country; long may it be so.
